A bibliography of early medieval numismatic literature
Post-Roman to Pre-Conquest
(to 2020)
This numismatic bibliography is a compilation of material from major sources including Grierson & Blackburn’s Medieval European Coinage, Gannon’s An
Iconography of Early Anglo-Saxon Coinage, Cook and Williams’ Coinage and History in the North Sea World c.500-1250 AD, the International Numismatic Commission’s
Survey of Numismatic Research and the personal bibliographies of some of our more prolific authors. It includes all the relevant volumes from the British Academy series
Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles. David Greenhalgh’s magnum opus Cumulative Index to Spink’s Numismatic Circular, volumes 1-100, has
proved invaluable as has both his and Robert Thompson’s versions of Contents of the British Numismatic Journal.
I am very grateful to all those who have willingly contributed to this compilation, amongst whom I particularly thank Martin Allen, the late Mark Blackburn, Claus Feveile, Anna Gannon, David
Greenhalgh, Michael Metcalf, Rory Naismith, Robert Thompson, Wybrand Op den Velde, and Gareth Williams. My effort has been purely organisational.
The original objective was to provide a consolidated database of the Anglo-Saxon and early medieval period as a supplement to Studies in Early Medieval Coinage (SiEMC) volume
3 to give students unified access to research material. For this reason, the listing is inclusive - it incorporates some titles on related subject areas (e.g. art and iconography), numismatics beyond
the immediate scope and period. However, the SiEMC Advisory Council decided not to include the bibliography in volume 3 in hardcopy, but to seek means of publishing it
online as a searchable resource, which could have significant advantages. In comparison to a static hardcopy bibliography, an electronic version is dynamic – it can be edited, corrected, augmented,
updated, collated with other bibliographies and searched. The last feature provides a particularly powerful tool for both researchers and casual enquirers if the search keys are flexible, if broad
access is facilitated, and if resources are available for regular maintenance.
Given that some sources are available only in printed, as opposed to electronic, format, character recognition software has been used to digitize such text. Unfortunately, this resulted in a
substantial number of errors of a wide variety of types and a loss of formatting – misread letters, omissions and unintended insertions, spacing errors, loss of italicisation, hyphenation,
punctuation and line continuity errors to name but a few. It is hoped that such inaccuracies have been identified by proof reading and corrected, but no doubt, some inconsistencies will have escaped
unnoticed. These are entirely the responsibility of the present compiler.
Inevitably, the sources from which this input is taken have their own style of presentation, which differ significantly from each other and from the house style adopted by
SiEMC. Varying use of italics, superscripts, underlines and abbreviations is compounded by ibid, idem, op. cit. and loc. cit. citations
whose integrity is lost in this composite work. Harvard style has been implemented in this listing. A purist would insist on absolute consistency and if the current work falls short of this high
standard, it will provide an objective for future revisions. The information is published at the foot of this page as a PDF facilitating data searches and sort routines. Microsoft Excel and Word
formats are available on request.
Self evidently, numismatists have an appreciation of detail, so I trust they are not intolerably offended by any lack of care. Satis caveat.
